 2016 Preview 


       Pleasant Grove completed the 2015 season with a 8-4 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region five, the Spartans earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Pleasant Grove reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Alexandria by a score of 36-14.

       Since 2010, Pleasant Grove has gone a combined 48-24. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 5A over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Pleasant Grove has managed to compile a record of 166-117. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 5A and 101st in the AHSAA.

       The Spartans are led by head coach Jim Elgin who is entering his thirteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 89-51 over the past twelve seasons at Pleasant Grove. Under his direction the Spartans have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Elgin.

       Coach Elgin's overall record as a head football coach in twelve season stands at 89-51 (63.6%).

       The Pleasant Grove Spartans will play in Class 5A region five during the 2016 season.

       The Spartans should be considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

       The Spartans open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Cordova on Friday, August 26 at Spartan Stadium. Last year the Cordova Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 13-1 and in first place in Class 4A region five. The Blue Devils lost in the semi-finals round of the Class 4A playoffs to Fayette County by a score of 32-0.

       Pleasant Grove and Cordova have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Spartans have a 3-1-0 record against the Blue Devils. They last met in with

       Pleasant Grove returns 5A All-State Junior athlete Myles Mason. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Morris Higginbotham coached three different teams to divisional state championships in the 1950s. He won titles at Walnut Grove in 1952, West Blocton in 1955 and Enterprise in 1960.
